Which do you prefer?
I've just been listening to recordings of Gould and Schiff, and Schiff is definitely my favourite out of those two.

What do people think of Jeno Jando? I haven't formed a detailed opinion yet, haven't listened to that much by him. I can tell you though that I'm immensely impressed by the sheer volume of his repertoire (I don't know if I just don't realise how much concert pianists get through normally ). Looking at the Naxos music library he's recorded absolutely loads of stuff .

I really like Jeno Jando, and you shouldn't be put off at all by slightly 'budget' feel of the naxos label. His Mozart is especiallly good, while there is nothing particularly inspired about his playing, he rarely puts a foot wrong. I haven't heard his recordings of the most demanding works (Rach, Liszt etc) but what i own i'm very satisfied with.

Regarding Schiff: Whilst he's exceptionally musical, and has a great sense of how to structure a performance, i can't help getting the impression that he's battling against the technical demands of just about everything he plays. Sure, he can get around most things, but doesn't seem to be blessed with the 'superhuman' technique of some virtuosos. It reminds me a bit of Wilhelm Kempff, (who i greatly prefer) who was famously described as playing not like a pianist, but a human being.

Me too. I think Schiff is one of the most musical pianists alive. Do you ever wonder what he could make of the 48 if he recorded them now? He plays three or four of them every day as 'his morning shower', so I can only imagine he'd have a lot to say through them.

I bet a recording by him would be poetic and moving. Steve
