Sat here listening to RVW's 8th Symphony and I just wondered if anyone else is as bonkers as me for British Symphonies in general? Just thumbing through my MP3 player reveals a heady selection of Parry, Alwyn, Arnold, RVW, Lloyd, Stanford, Tippett etc. Do I stand alone in this regard? I think my favourite is Bliss' Colour Symphony which will be on a televised Prom before the end of the month.. Don't miss it!

I don't know many at all. I've heard a few excerpts of a few of RVW symphonies but don't really know them well.
Has British symphony composing gone downhill do people think? There aren't that many around really and hardly if any British composers have gone into double figures for symphonies. Compared with other composers from other countries, this seems quite poor.

Well there is the "spectre" that is the Ninth symphony. If you consider all those composers that got to Nine and then either died or gave up. Both RVW and Arnold got to 9 for example. George Lloyd managed 12. Robert Simpson a whole lot more, and let's not even start on Havergal Brian...
As a form, the symphony has certainly lost it's lustre in modern times, but this is a trend which can be seen across Western Art Music in general. Perhaps this is because the role that the symphony orchestra plays has changed and that form of music is no longer required to serve the purpose it used to.

This is where we have something in common MrB, RVW symphonies are fab, and what date is Bliss Colour symphony at the proms, thats one which I can't miss. ( I just hope that it doesn't clash with summer holiday or cropredy, and that boys are still at Nanny and Grandads being spoit rotten!)

I'll be there, and anyone else who's around is more than welcome to buy me a lemonade afterwards.

You lucky stick. I would _love_ to go, but I fear the wife might have something to say about that....

Bring her along too. Contractions between movements would be a marked improvement on the usual applause. ;D

A 7pm prom... and on the same day as Blue Peter Prom round 2...its terribly tempting. Matti would cope with both, but Alex would be knackered by the end.
I'll have to discuss it with hubby, as he wouldn't want me to be too tired either!
