As some of you might already know, i've been learning the flute for a couple of weeks. I've also started to get a rash under my bottom lip. I'm on antibiotics for something at the moment and thought maybe it's to do with that, then I thought it was to do with a new cleanser I have. This morning (it's got worse) I realised it's the flute! I've been practising more and i'm also allergic to any metal other than gold, but usually this isn't a problem because it only concerns what jewellery I wear (has to be solid gold : . Is there anything I can do? I didn't know whether a plaster over the bottom of the mouthpiece would work or whether you can buy a solid gold mouthpiece. I'm quite upset now as I was really enjoying it

I'd suggest trying to use some cream as a barrier between as much of your bottom lip as you can and the instrument. Obviously, with the flute it'll be difficult as the bottom lip is the point-of-contact with the instrument; but see if you can apply some Sudocrem, or even Vaseline, as a hypoallergenic barrier between the metal and your lip.

The problem with putting cream on, such as vaseline, is that you'll end up slipping all over the place!!! try sticking a stamp on! Sounds crazy I know but it works.........or micropore tape that you use to hold bandages on. Both should work ok, you'll just need to make sure they only go up to the hole and not over.
The other option is to buy a new headjoint, that you can get with a gold liplate. These come in various carat of gold I think. I'm not sure if you can do this, but it might be worth it financially, to see if you could have your lip plate taken off the headjoint and a gold lip plate putting on. Not sure if that's possible, but it would definately be cheaper if it is!!

I can sympathise - I was horribly allergic to my first flute (nickel) though I didn't realise that was what was causing the awful eczema till I upgraded to one with a silver head! So you react to silver too? Not really a good idea for a more expensive flute, but the friend who bought my old flute off my painted the lipplate with nail-varnish where it was in contact with her lip...?

Wow, that's the best idea yet, thanks!
