I have been learning the clarinet for 8 months now so have decided that maybe it is time that I actually get one of my own. But I don't know what type to get, so I was wondering if someone would be able to advise me. My main problem is whether to get a plastic student clarinet or a wooden upgrade one. I did ask my teacher but talk about being indecisive he wouldn't commit to either because of all the 'just in cases' involved. Thanks x

I am currently playing on a friends Yamaha 25II , or a Selmer Prelude (which is awful)

Lol, it's a cliche, but you need to go to a shop and try them . Buffets are good, solid, and reliable. I've never been 100% sure on Yamahas myself, but again it differs with each person. Wooden or plastic, depends on how much you have to spend and how much you think you're going to use it.

I am planning on going to try some next week, but I just want to know which ones to look at baiscally plastic or wooden.
As christmas I can ask for the money off my parents and add to it, to get the clarinet I need. I am at gd3/4 at the moment so can get away with a plastic one but if I carry on i'll need a wooden one, won't I?

If you carry on then a wooden would be useful yeah. I use a Buffet E11, try that .

I will do, it will be between that and the yamaha wooden upgrade model.
Are wooden clarinets much heavier than plastic ones?

They can be yeah, but I've never really noticed that much difference. Probably because a sax is heavy!

True but a sax has a neck strap, suppose I could use one on clarinet too ;D

Hehe, it's still heavy though! I've never had an issue with it so I doubt you will, and they're worth suffering for .

I think I might have a strap for it somewhere actually, I used one for a few weeks when I began playing ... it put too much pressure on my thumb.

If you were my student, I would suggest that you buy an upgrade wooden one. Something like the Buffet E11/13, the first yamaha wooden one.
If you see any second hand E13's on your clarinet shopping days anywhere, cn you let me know???!!!!!

Get a Hanson. They are a great company with an excellent customer service ethic. OK, mine has sat on the shelf for 9 months but I love it really...
