Yes, I was actually singing earlier It was You Raise Me Up, I have the piano part to it, and was playing it and just singing casually along but I cannot hold the vocal line at all when also concentrating on piano. How can I do it?

Initially, with difficulty, its normally my piano playing that goes to pieces. You'll get there in the end.

It's also not easy to sing whilst piano-ing because your posture may not be quite right.
Now, Pearl, she's a singer, and stands up when she plays the piano.....

I'm as bothered about the quality of my singing and getting posture correct because it's hopeless anyway, I just would like to be able to do both half decently with going totally off key and wondering what on earth I am singing, or playing totally and utterly the wrong rhythms on the piano .

Maybe you just need to practice both separately at first - like you do hands on the piano. Get both up to a reasonnable standard before you attempt it at the same time. Patience pays off in the end.

I find I have to know both parts VERY well before attempting to go together. This is especially true if the piano part is not either very simple rhythms or the tune and accompaniment. I can do a passable job of I Dreamed a Dream (Les Mis, RH: tune and chords; LH: Arpeggio-type things) but a poor effort on On My Own (Neither hand plays anything like the tune!).

I can do the verse parts a lot better now. It's the chorus that causes the main problem. It's high for me and I sound like a strangled cat, and the piano part is in the lower octave doing something different.
I find it hard when the piano and voice are in 3rds because I start singing the piano line. Everyone I speak to says it's easy to pitch 3rds but I can't.

You might want to try standing, just like Pearl. We occasionally do Your Song by Elton John in the band and I stand to sing and play that one, although I can do it seated as well, I just make sure I don't do my usual "Kevin the teenager" slouch Posture and from memory, for me, they are the key things.
