I've always wondered this and I thought of it again whilst watching a bit of Cosi fan tutte. I hear lots about singers having the correct posture etc, yet in operas they're sitting down, lying down, is that not harder to sing that way, or am I missing something?

Yes, but whilst lying or sitting, they make sure that their body from waist to mouth is still in a straight line, as it would be if standing correctly. That way their diaphragm is still free to operate correctly, and their airways are not kinked (think what happens when you kink a hosepipe - the same thing happens to the voice). One of my students has got to grade 6 only ever having practiced in her car!
