Took the plunge and entered grade 8 singing at last!
programme:-
Pur dicesti Widmung Come sing and dance Can't help lovin' dat man
Unaccompanied :- possibly Sky boat song unless someone else can come up with something better in the next few days!
Not sure if i'm going to have to send in a theory exemption, think my last exam was early 90's and in my maiden name but I am registered as a teacher with my trinity diploma so maybe they won't.
Any ideas on how to practice properly would be appreciated, I actually just sing through my songs to a backing cd (or sitting at the piano) and never really take them apart and work on them.
Might send a recording to the forums site in a week or two, but then again I might not ;D

I think they probably will ask for evidence of theory exemption. I am intending to do grade 6 cello soon and I asked the board were my theory/practical musicianship exams still valid as I'd done them many, many years ago. The reply was that they were but I'd need to send certificate/mark form when I enter the cello exam.
Good luck with your grade 8.

Widmung. Yummy. Practising properly tip: Heidi's mega-tutor takes her through songs a phrase at a time. She first sings the phrase to 'aaah' and m-t stops at any note that is not placed properly or resonating to the best of Heidi's development, and corrects the sound. Once the sound is the best Heidi can get, they add the words and repeat the process. After each correction, m-t asks, "What was different that time to allow you to produce that sound?". The idea is that Heidi recognises what she did differently and reproduces it in practice. Heidi is supposed to practise in detail like this. I don't think she does, mind. I reckon she belongs more to the Nat school of practice. ;D Go Nat and Heidi ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I hate the Widmung accompaniment, far too fast and in flats, yuck.

I hate the Widmung accompaniment, far too fast and in flats, yuck. Yep, my accompanist usually gets to my last note and then says something like "oh and the ave maria bit on the end" and gives up ;D

My Grade 5 theory exemption was O Level Music. I don't have to produce the certificate anymore... the degree does nicely instead, and besides ABRSM have my details on computer and have assured me that provided I send in my marriage certificate, they can check up my details from 1992!

Possum, if you sing at all like you did in your emailed recordings you should do extremely well. Remember my comments and always be mindful od what your teacher says. Keep calm and good luck. You have the potential to do very well.

Thanks everyone Have been practicing in front of a mirror today, it's so strange, you think you're smiling when you sing but you're not!!! Am trying to work on the "communicating the music" bit now Have my lesson in the morning and have to break the news to my teacher that i've changed 2 of the songs Going to sing Someone to watch over me (instead of can't help lovin dat man), and The Ash Grove instead of Amazing Grace ;D

Am trying to work on the "communicating the music" bit now Echoes of Heidi's teacher here. "Look at yourself whilst you sing that note Heidi. You will see your tongue glueing itself to the roof of your mouth." ;D Phlegmatic creatures, singing teachers. They have to be. I am sure he will take it very well ;D ;D ;D

My teacher gave me a different exercise today which went up to Eb above the treble stave. I get to the D and he shouts keep the tongue lying low at the front!!! He's right, as soon as I did that the notes came out, the tongue is my enemy when it comes to singing too ;D Didn't tell him about the change of songs, we only did the first three which is good because I get another week to practise before I sell it to him
