I am just about to give my 2nd piano lesson. Decided to get Making The Grade: Prep level for repertoire and the Adult Piano Course (Alfred's) for tutoring. I was never taught with a tutor book so I don't know how it's going to go!
She's 12, very musical and can already read treble clef...just.

Which books did you get her in the end? Abracadabra saxophone and something else that she brought. She wants to play jazzy things, but she doesn't know all the note values even though she knows the notes. So she's getting a bit frustrated that we'r not doing any jazzy things til we can play the difference between crotchets and quavers, coz she slows down and speeds up depending on how many she has in a row!

Can you teach her anything jazzy by rote to start with, but give her easier stuff rhythmically for reading practice until she fully grasps the difference? You could also try working at rhythm on its own, eg. with Flip-A-Rhythm books, which I use with most of my pupils as rhythm practice.

Or just tell her a few notes she knows and get her to improvise using those notes etc?

I've been doing aural with her: getting her to say the letter names, then sing letters and notes and clap the rhythm of whatever we're working on. She's really good at the pitch stuff, just the clapping lets her down. I'll try flip charts though. I asked her if she counted in her head when she played and she said she didn't know, but listening to her I don't think she does. How can I make her?! I count outloud, but she plays at her own tempo!

I could try that. I had her clapping the pulse when I played her piece before. But she can't seem to hear the beat.

She's only young though and it's all new to her, so keep going with what you're doing and I am sure she'll get there soon. .
