One of the topics for the essay submission is based around repertoire in the first year of learning for either young beginners or adult beginners. Could anyone who has done this or has knowledge of it, tell me how much material they used and made reference to? Thanks .

This is the one I did but I'm too tired just now to say much of use! Basically I chose my favourite materials at this level and evaluated their merits, uses, pros, cons, also thinking of young beginners and adult learners, can they already read music etc.
I'll say more when I'm not half asleep!

Ok thanks, in your essay did you include stuff for both young and adults or did you just focus on one?

Oops.....forgot all about this thread. Basically I had one main book for children and one for adult beginners, and supplementary material for each. I looked through as many tutors as I could look at. If I remember correctly my teacher asked me to look at in each one
Age group aimed at?
Assume you can read music?
Layout (spacial elements, pictures, diagrams)
Difficulty levels covered
Material for teaching each concept (technical/musical/quizzes etc.)
Pros, cons
From that I narrowed my choices down and discussed how they taught technique theory and aural in a holistic way, from the very basics to about grade 1 (few will go beyond this in a year, especially children with no musical experience.), and seperated children and adults as different material is appropriate for each. Show you are flexible, not one method regardless of age, stage, likes, dislikes. You might want to look at Music Through Time or similar books as well.
Do try and back things up with other books, like clarinet technique (I had Weston's 'The Clarinettist's Companion), or music teaching books (Music Teachers' Companion etc.)
Any more questions just ask or email.

Assume you can read music? I can yes . I can't really decide between this topic and the introducing new piece one. I did a bit on the latter tonight but keep changing my mind!
