Oh boy, what a wonderful term is 'my first pay slip'. Make the most of it. There is only ever one first pay slip. The excessive tax will be because you have not yet got a tax code, so you are being taxed at what was called in my day, the 'emergency rate' - i.e. no allowances. You can put this right by filling in a tax form. Get in touch with your tax office and you will eventually get the overpayment back. Enjoy that pay slip, Nat.

I have got a tax code - it says BR which my mum says is the maximum tax thing, so I have to fill out a P46 or something?

That is the kind of thing. I don't know the modern equivalent to my day, but the principle holds true. IR will take your money until you prove you don't owe it. The good news is you don't have to chase them for the money. Fill in the appropriate form and the refund will happen automatically at one of your pay days, made via your payslip. That will be very nice.

..and if they delay payment, you get interest on it too. Still best to get those forms off pronto, though.
