Ok, this might be a long ramble and not make sense, so apologies in advance.
The woodwind teaching job I have at a school, is definitely for this year because I am covering somebody. Who knows if she will come back or not, it's probably quite likely but that's another matter. Anyway, my problem is, that I'm torn between strictly following what the previous teacher was planning on doing with them and what I want and feel is right to do with the pupils. Most of them, if not all, do exams. We usually have a special visit in March, and to make sure all the pupils get the money in on time etc we send letters out and ask for the money before they break up for Christmas. Now, I have a million and one things to do so ideally I need to decide on who is taking what exams in about 3 weeks, so I can get a letter sorted, run it past the head of music and send it out and pray that the letters reach the parents and I get the money.
Now looking at the list I was given, I don't want to enter half of them because I personally don't think they're ready. They might well be in 4 months time, which is my problem, I don't know if to risk it with some of them in the hope that a fixed exam looming might suddenly hit home. I don't want people to come back at me and say "well they're ready in my opinion so why on earth did you not enter them". It could be me being over cautious or I could be completely wrong and have misjudged what is needed, either way I need to make a decision and I'm stumped. I don't want the first major lot of pupils I enter to fail. I panic every time I teach them because I know that most of them have been put down to possibly do an exam, when I'd much rather do the exams with the pupils that really want to and I feel they are ready, and just be able to teach the others without the prospect of an exam.
Actually, looking at the list there's only 12 of them, but I am only extremely sure on 2. There are 3 who I think will be ready by then and are old and mature enough to put the work in. The rest, well, some will be touch and go, and some will be a complete no go unless they pull their finger out.
So, erm, I'm not quite sure what the point of that was, it was more of a rant, but if anyone can make sense of it and give me any advice , I'd be very grateful .
