After a lesson today when I had to give my grade 1 pupil a study plan I had complete agreement from her mother (a drama teacher) over the importance of finding the right way of motivating each pupil. Today was the lets send the rocket up well in advance to avoid a last minute panic lesson. Mother, pupil and I all agreed that this was the time to hear that message rather than have the lesson sponsored by Kleenex a week before and mother and I taring out our hair.

Today was the lets send the rocket up well in advance to avoid a last minute panic lesson. That tickled me. Mine starts with, "Are you starting to panic about this exam yet, dear? No? Then it is time to start." ;D

The rhythm system can be very useful and is one I do use and have found successful. This could be useful, Jo. I take a relaxed attitude to rhythm because it eventually sorts itself out in kids minds, but maybe I am missing a trick. Perhaps once the card-based, choc-bribed 'notes text' has come to the end of its useful life, it could be replaced by a 'rhythm test' instead. Do you mind supplying some more detail please, Jo? That would be of interest to most of us.

Steve its very similar to the French ta ta-te but as th BKA do flash cards and use hand signals (to invlove another area of intelligence) it can be very useful.
I'd Pm Lady be norty she found the flash cards.

Thanks Jo. I think I shall evolve my own cards. I tried French time-names with kids years ago. I think they are brilliant in the way the sound represents the note lengths. The kids just thought they were silly and either giggled or clammed up through embarrassment. I need things I can use with a 14 year old as well as a 7 year old. I can just imagine what some of my lot would make of the hand signals. I suspect they would quickly become gestures of a somewhat different nature. ;D
