Has anyone else looked closely at these yet? I'm thinking particularly about the Grade One studies. Chickens suggests crotchet=144. My Grade One candidate doesn't stand a chance of playing those semiquavers at 144! And Slithery Snake suggests crotcet=53, but it's in 6/8 time...?

I thought they were rather fast too. Dulciana, do you think they'll have to play three studies or will the examiner choose two?

They play them all, as far I know. They had to play all four of the studies in the old Guildhall exams, 'though only Introductory to Grade 2 included studies.

Thanks. I think it said in the syllabus that three had to be 'prepared' which made me think they may not all be asked in the exam. Can't remember who has borrowed my syllabus!

Quote from page 8 of the sillyblobs, from the Technical Work section: ''The purpose of this section of the examination is to encourage the development of the necessary technical skills for the performance of pieces. Candidates should aim for accuracy an an appropriate and even pace. Higher marks are given for attention to musical shaping and the promptness and confidence of delivery." This implies to me that confidence, fluency, accuracy and printed musical directions than a slavish adherence to the suggested mm mark. For sure, semiquavers at crotchet = 144 sounds insane for a grade 1.

It was insane for my Haydn sonata even at grade 8! Thanks for the quote - that's helpful.

I reckon Chickens is a typo and should read quaver = 144 which is quite reasonable

That's my plan - to take it as a typo!
