Does anyone have any experience of entering piano pupils for TG (or Trinity or Guildhall in the past) with their own composition as an alternative to a third piece? If so, what sort of comments did you get? And to what extent did you feel the composition itself was being judged as opposed to how well it was played? (Assuming, obviously, that it's difficult enough for the grade entered.) I'm going to let a Grade 3 do this next session, and I'd be interested to hear it has gone for others first.

I've never entered anyone for own composition but have put 2 or 3 pupils in for the 'structured composition' option in electronic keyboard. This option puts bits of melody in but not all - the student has to compose the rest. The melody given looks to me easier than the grade pieces in the same book, and my pupils have produced music which is slightly technically easier.
The impression I've had from examiners' comments is that its about 50-50 between composition and performance. I'll be very interested to hear your experience with an own composition - I've not had the courage to try it yet!
