Some of you will have seen my post elsewhere about me winning a Shostakovich competition. The book I won begins with the above (controversial?) statement. The main thesis is that Shosta saw music as an essential part of society, as a means of uniting people, as a force....and the author says that Beethoven's view of his art was pretty much along the same lines (thinking of his 9th, for example). Any thoughts? Any Beethoven fans out there?
