Just thought I'd share this piece of useless information to see if anybody else has similar experiences! I set aside some time to practise last night and ended up drinking too much in the early part of the evening, so I couldn't play for toffee when the time came. However, not to be outdone, I decided to do what I rarely do (because it was ALL I could do) which is practise hands seperately. Annoyed with myself, I thought I was achieving nothing, as I still couldn't coordinate two hands, BUT, when I went back to the piano this morning in a sober state, I found I could suddenly play bits fluently that I'd been stumbling over two days ago - i.e. the bits that I'd practised hands seperately last night! It was great, because I had no sense of having done this after a long slog, as usual; it seemed to have occured by magic! So I take back anything I've ever said about seperate practice being a waste of time - and I must remember to keep some wine in the house for my next mega-practice session!

I don't have anything sensible to add (as usual - before anyone else says it! ) except that when I'm drunk I think I'm a great pianist ;D and am liable to launch into the Revolutionary or something like that - complete with zillions of wrong notes - but hey, I think I sound brilliant!

*wonders if practising with hands separately will work on the recorder* I remember we had a girl in our year at university who sat two exams in second year, one sober and one drunk. She also did most of her revision whilst inebriated. Guess which one she passed... ....er, and now she's a psychiatrist! ;D

So you didn't request that title under your name for nothing then . I was once told that the way to get loads of work done when completing a large project was to get drunk and then one doesn't care what one writes; look the next day and it's actually okay really (obviously depends quite how drunk one gets...) saves agonising over all those 'how should I word that' sentences. Never tried it but I imagine it would be effective.....

I have never practiced piano or played whilst drunk (as yet!), but it definitely helps when singing or maybe I just think it does ;D My teacher entered me for a festival years ago and I turned up with a volvic water bottle containing vodka Dulciana, if the practice had an effect then something worked and if you were under the influence at least it wasn't boring

Well I had a glass of red wine just AFTER my Grade 7, and one just BEFORE my Grade 8. Guess which one I did best in? Yep! Grade 8. Was it the influence or not - don't know, but in small amounts it does relax you, doesn't it?

After the 19th performance of 'The Clown' in Grimsby on Friday, I sure wished I was drunk. ;D Preferably by some large entity that would eventually pee me out somewhere else ;D ;D ;D ;D * ahem ahem shuffle shuffle * sorry.

I can't play at all after even a very small amount of alcohol.
*However* a friend of mine who accompanies our amateur musical society rehearsals is unbelievable. Drink hardly seems to affect his ability to play. I've seen him barely able to stand up after the dreaded "after show party" (which anyone involved in Am. Dram. will have experienced), stagger into my flat, sit himselve at the piano and launch into Fantasy Impromptu.

I have some memories of having played while drunk...no idea how good it was though. Something's clouding the memory there

Practicing under the influence of what? Alcohol done that tons of times not practising today a) kids at home b) back is completely knackered c) I don't know whether since the fentanyl kicked in the reason all I want to do is sleep is due to lack of sleep recently owing to back pain or whether its just knocked me out. Will let people know when I'm less sleepy.

Somehow I think my instrument would not like me if I tried that...
