Thought I should just write a quick note about the adverts on the site. I do not profit from them: they have nothing to do with me, they merely appear on the board because of the free hosting. Hosting costs money but I don't have to pay for this board because it's hosted by a company who do free forum board hosting. The condition of this is that the company will put adverts on it: I could pay for them to be removed but it would cost $7 per 50,000 pages served, or per month (which ever is the shortest); which is not worth it really. So sorry about the adverts but it means that someone will host this lovely forum for free .

And if you're cunning enough to be using firefox, download adblock and block them.

There's usually an advert at the top of the page, and a few links at the bottom.

There's usually an advert at the top of the page, and a few links at the bottom. I haven't managed to do anything about the links, but you can loose the adverts at the top using Firefox instead of IE. Just don't tell the company that hosts this forum Steve

I've heard a fair amount about Firefox being superior to IE and I have tried it but I couldn't get used to the aesthetics, having used IE for so long.
What're the pros and cons to FF?

What're the pros and cons to FF? Pros - tabbed browsing, popup blockers, far less vulnerable to spyware, much more customisable design, loads of little useful extensions which are free to download and some other stuff I've probably forgotten. Cons - a small minority of pages won't load properly or will be formatted badly, takes a second or two longer to open when first starting (although opening a new tab is quicker than opening a new IE window), can't really think of much else.

I have found the same as Trebor. In addition, some purchasing websites do not work with Firefox. Having said that, Firefox comes with a 'View this page in IE' function on a right mouse click. Most pages translate easily. Having said that, I have occasionally set up online orders for goods, only to find that the order fails at the paying stage because the website is only compatible with IE. This is a rare occurence. I find the flexibility, security and extensibility of Firefox more than makes up for the occasional inconvenience. I have been using it for more than two years and regard IE as pathetic. Steve

The main feature I like is tabbed browsing; that and not being written by Microsoft . Also that little add on that we're all, of course, not using on this page . Actually I've found that's useful to not have to see big pictures in signatures too: It's a good compromise not to ban them but for everyone not to have to look at them if they don't want and it makes the page long . I just really can't live without tabbed browsing now though....

There's actually a plugin for IE that one can download to do tabbed browsing. I had to uninstall it though as it was too annoying: it forced a default homepage which one couldn't change (I think it was Ask Jeeves actually) and when opening a new tab the focus went straight to that tab. It was a good idea: just a shame that all the features seemed to be trying to impose certain default settings . Firefox is much better anyway .

Blocking pop-up advertising is great. But please can I put in a plug for my Next Recital "Fairest Isle" - a celebration of two great eras of English Song. It's taking place in Cambridge on Saturday 7th September.
I can let you know more details once I've sortd out the Box Office.
