I love Shostakovich:
Symphonies 5, and 7 and 10...try and listen to Rostropovich conducting Cello concerti again Rostropovich playing Violin concerto (no 1 is awesome) of course I will recommend Maxim, but you know I am biased! Piano concerti, no 1 with trumpet is a bit special, try for Maxim Shostakovich (composer's son)
Chamber music Viola sonata (Bashmet or Daniel Hope is interesting) You already know the Preludes and Fugues, I like Tatiana Nikoleyevich Piano trio no 2...if you can get the current Beaux Arts trio it should be good (not heard it myself though only live) Piano quintet
Quartets? No 8 is THE ONE! but all are fantastic...Emersons, Borodins, or Beethoven for these
Enough for now

I studied his 8th String Quartet briefly...that is the one with the DSCH motif isn't it? yes, that's the one, and it has quite a few quotes from a lot of his other pieces (eg cello concerto quite noticably). It is sort of autobiographical, and very very emotional.

Mmmmmmmmmm! Shostakovich! My favourite topic!
Don't miss out on his Preludes and Fugues (Op 87). BRILLIANT! They were written for Tatiana Nicolayeva and you can get a CD of her playing them - but Ashkenazy and Keith Jarrett have also recorded them, and there's also a recording by Sherbakov. But really what you should be doing, Princess_Moose, is getting hold of the piano music and playing them for yourself. Start right at the beginning with the Prelude in C major (gorgeous, yummy chords) and then the Fugue (all on the white notes!!). My current favourite is the A major, but I keep discovering new ones to tackle. *Sigh* I was going to do some ironing, but I think I'll play some Shosta instead. My lifetime ambition is to play his Piano Concerto number 2 with an orchestra.

My lifetime ambition is to play his Piano Concerto number 2 with an orchestra. I could get you a date with the CSO to play it if you want (That is of course the Chesterfield Symphony Orchestra not the Chicago )

Would you want a play through or to perform at a concert? If you are really serious I will start making some enquiries. It could be a couple of years as our concerts are arranged well in advance...but well I would really like to play the orchestral part too.

Wow, goodness me, you DO sound serious. I'd just love to play the piece - don't know if I'd be good enough to perform at a concert (not sure if the ticket-buyers would get good value for money!!). Actually if the time-scale was a few years that would give me plenty of time to practise! OK - make some gentle enquiries, and let me know!
(I suppose I'd better get hold of the music now - maybe its totally unplayable!!)
