Hi everyone, I decided to make a very late new year's resolution and get cooking (as I am useless and eat mainly out of packets)....so in a effort to get some inspiration I was wondering what are your favourite dishes, what do you cook best? (nothing too posh, just basic yummy meals!). Cheers!!

Leek crumble (as a vegetable). Soften some butter in a saucepan and add 2-3 chopped leeks. Steam like this for 8-10 minutes on low heat. Transfer to a casserole dish. Meanwhile make some fresh breadcrumbs and mix these with a generous amount of grated cheese. Pile on top of the leeks and press down. Bake in the oven until golden brown. Very tasty with a roast dinner.
Sorry cannot be precise with amounts as I am very much a "that looks enough" cook!

I've just been given a book for my birthday called 'the vegetarian student cookbook' which I have to say looks fab and pretty simple! sadly I haven't managed to get to the shops yet so haven't made any! suppose I could just raid the fridge and improvise slightly on some of the reeally simple recipies...?

I thought this was a joke thread, until I realised the author wasn't Steve .

White sauce: 25g flour, 25g butter, half-pint of milk and 40g cheese (less if strong flavoured). 6-7 dried lasagne sheets. Parmesan & Black pepper to serve

OK, I'll share two of my faves: Portabello mushrooms topped with blue cheese/goats' cheese are lovely: Take a portabello mushroom Scrape off the gills with a large spoon Mix the gills with cheese - mature stilton works well Reapply to the mushroom Oven bake for 25-30 minutes Secondly, yoghurt soda bread - see www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A694640 . I use wholewheat flour with added rye and bran . 10 minutes preparation, 30 minutes in the oven and ta-da - freshly baked bread.

I can do toast...get a slice of bread, put it in the toaster until golden (I don't understand why some people like it burnt to a crisp), then apply butter/jam/marmite per personal taste.
I really should learn to cook sometime.
