Is anyone else in a situation where they are teaching themselves an instrument? I find it so hard to motivate myself to be bothered to practice. Even making myself work for an exam is doing no good. How can I find motivation to practice without having a teacher to guide me and all that stuff?

It was not having a teacher which led to my not making much progress - I got very frustrated because I knew how I wanted to sound, but not how to achieve it. Having said that, one of the problems was that I was playing in a vacuum - nobody to play with! That's not strictly true, because I could get my husband to do me a bit of continuo, but I've always wanted to play in bigger ensembles as well as doing the soloist thing. I only got up the courage to ask others to play about five or six months ago, partly because there aren't exactly lots of folk queueing up to do baroque stuff with a recorder player.... Which instrument is getting the self-tuition? Can you get together with others and do a bit of jamming?

At the moment; clarinet and piano. Clarinet is the main problem, because I want to do grade 8 in November. Which is so not going to happen at this rate.

Are there parallels in technique between clarinet and sax? If so, you surely would be fine...I know it's not the same as learning your exam pieces, but getting some time playing other stuff will help tone, dexterity, sightreading and all that. I'm deliberately fitting in some not-diploma-music playing with others before my exam, to try to keep some proportion and to help with just having fun! The dreaded SC#LES are a different kettle of fish - or are you doing Trinity?

to try to keep some proportion and to help with just having fun! You are asking Nat to keep a sense of proportion? ;D Out Nat? ;D ;D * ducks thrown boot and watches karma plummet * Seriously Nat, anacrusis is right. By the time you take any of these exams you will be a second year uni student. These are pre-professional exams designed for passing by pretty inexperienced individuals. Steve

I won't smite you this time Steve, but watch it . That is the problem though, just because I will be a 2nd year music student doesn't mean I can play any old instrument. I'm far from anywhere near pass standard for g8 clarinet, I have a lot of work to do.
