Just wondering if I should trail out the last movement of the Italian Concerto in a last ditch attempt to make them think that Bach isn't all "dry". I use the Italian for that very purpose. Describe ritornello form and invertible double counterpoint to make them feel all brainy and they love it.

Did I say I could play this...? Wasted another hour today deciding that this one won't make it for December either! I wish I'd written in just the odd finger number the last time...

Close your eyes, turn off your brain and play. The fingering will return. Guess how I know? And in future, write the fingering in. Guess how I know to do that?

Sorry. I have performed this about 90 times. Um. How did I do it? Yes. I remember. Clamp eyes to music. Disengage brain. Play passage until original fingering returns. Hurriedly write fingering in. Vow never to make the same mistake again. Ye Gods. As a youngster, a fingering once worked out was there for ever. Or so I thought. This turns out not to be true. Bit of a nuisance isn't it, discovering that? Hey ho. Steve

What's 'TOP'? Something to do with the ABRSM Forums? (Expect it's obvious....)

I have never been good at maintaining a repertoire, though things generally come back fairly quickly - this one's just got so many dam notes in it! I never really intended to put it into cold storage; my life just seemed to get busier, and all of a sudden the diploma I was aiming for wasn't really an option. I'll give it another day or two to see if auto takes over. Good advice with the fingering!

Mike Ehup Mike TOP stands for The Other Place - the AB forums from\which most of us are: banned; pre-moderated; alienated; otherwise generally in?briated-off. Take no notice, apart from seeing what a good time we all have here. Steve

I have never been good at maintaining a repertoire, though things generally come back fairly quickly - That is the definition of a 'repertoire'. Even full-time concert soloists can only play so-much music at the drop of a hat. Sorry if this sounds condescending. It isn't meant to. For years, I thought that 'a repertoire' copnsisted of pieces one could play instantly. It took me years to realise that 'repertoire' meant all the stuff we had learned, that would 'come back' quickly.

No, it doesn't sound condescending! It's just not what I understood by the term! I think of people's repertoire as the stuff that they can play at the drop of a hat when requested. But you've made me feel much better now! Have a Karma point!

Just given a lot of rectals, that is all. 'Rectal' is not a mistyping. Years ago, an 8 year old bounced in for a lesson proclaiming, "Me and Dad are coming to your rectal on Saturday."
