Anybody have a clue about hunting for recordings of rather a narrow spectrum of music? Having said I always like to listen to as many as I can when preparing a piece, to see what (apart from what I could find) is hidden in the music - I never did manage to hear a recording of the Linde piece I prepared for my exam, and I find it very difficult to find much recorder or baroque chamber music in the shops - they tend to put out the more mainstream, big baroque works, and only by famous composers. Is there a way to search for recordings of more obscure music? Googling hasn't really helped me that much.

Have you tried Naxos? Or main stream CD publisher people to see if they do recordings? Or if you know of players who do record, try to contact them to see if they've done any of the pieces you want?
I always thought it was really hard to find any sax music on CD but then I saw my sax teacher's collection and I thought hmm I must be looking in the wrong places!

anacrusis - if it was the castleclassics website that did it for you.... They are a small, but impressive set-up. I've ordered loads of CDs from them and they all arrive beautifully packaged by first class post. Also, everything you see on the website is available NOW (unlike a book my brother ordered from Amazon for my birthday in March....it still hasn't arrived!). They seem to be pretty good on budget-Naxos editions (huge range) and on the more difficult to find stuff. Highly recommended!!

It was indeed - thanks very much. We do have a little CD shop in Edinburgh which has a bigger than average range of the stuff I'm usually looking for (the father of the lady who runs it made our harpsichord...), and they can order things, but I'm usually looking for inspiration in the shelves, and not finding it. It's also very nice not having to lie on the floor like a wally, going flip-flip through the CD cases of the stuff I like but clearly nobody else does...

You don't need to throw down a gauntlet. Try www.castleclassics.co.uk - they've got it! [disclaimer - I do NOT work for castle classics, but am more than happy to recommend them!!!]

Oh no! Not PDQ! Please tell me you're not being serious! I know he has his fans........but I am NOT one of them, in a big way! The choir I sing in was asked to do PDQ a while back - the choir hasn't recovered - we had people walking out en masse.
No, No PDQ here!

Its (sorry - personal opinion here) absolute tripe, pedalled by a man called Schikele. He takes something well-known (bit of Bach for example) and then writes totally drivellish words to it. Ok some people find it witty and "clever" - I find it empty, pointless and a waste of time. Its all very ha-ha slapstick sort of stuff - it makes Victorian music-hall pieces look positively intellectual in comparison.
I will now sit back and receive endless flak from his admirers! Give me a real Bach Chorale any day (even an appalling performance of JSBach would be preferable to an outstanding performance of PDQ).
