The forum has been more than a little quiet recently... As you all (probably don't) know, I am studying Chinese in Shanghai, and next january i will have finished my next academic year. My original plan was to take an MA in something at a Chinese university, but i have been spending more and more time on the piano, and have decided to take a crack at the Shanghai conservatory course (undergraduate, that is.) For most foreign students language is the real problem. For me it will be the piano Auditions start early next year. I have been told their audition requirements are as follows: 1. a Bach piece 2. a Chopin etude 3. any other etude 4. a sonata (1st or 3rd movement) 5. any own choice work My rough plan so far is: 1. Bach f minor P+F from book II (just started) 2. Chopin op.25 no.5 ('wrong notes') (also just started) 3. not sure about this one. Maybe liszt paganini no.4. Or scriabin op.65 no.2 (neither learnt yet) 4. Not sure about this one either. I was thinking an early Schubert sonata. I like the A major one a lot (D.664 i think). 5. I think i will choose 'my joys', a Chopin song transcribed by liszt (already learnt). Any words of advice/wisdom/encouragement/caution/etc??? Any repertoire suggestions? Does this programme seem balanced/difficult/interesting enough? (It would be wonderful to get at least one response this time...) Schubertiad

I can't really offer much advice as I never studied at a Conservatoire. I did audition though, and remember that the pieces I played were mainly my teacher's suggestion and not necessarily pieces that showed off my strengths. Make sure that you're comfortable playing your pieces to the best of your ability and not necessarily because they're the most difficult. Hope this helps, good luck
