I just have to push the pad it back down onto the crook, aw well I am lucky to have other saxes to practice on even if they are in the wrong key

Yes, there is almost an octave of notes on the flute that you play in up an octave due to your embouchure and support rather than changing any keys. E in the middle register to C#, you have to control the octave with your mouth not the instrument.

Just be slightly careful how you word things here. That was how things were explained to me when I was a beginner and have spent so long at music college getting out of bad habits. Keep your embouchure loose. You gett he next octave by making the air speed twice as fast. Try to make as little movement with your lips as posssible. Your lips will eventually be used to fine tune things, but they shouldn't really be used to control the octaves. That should be done with air.
Hopefully that's clear. Sorry it took a while to reply. I've been on holiday!!! And the room's still moving side to side after a few days with all the water in Venice!!
