One of those things I've got to do in the next couple of days is write a Programme for my recital.
Fortunately I've done this sort of thing before, and the net is certainly making things easier. For a start I only had two songs whose words I couldn't download from the internet (O joy of joys), so I now have the job of writing two salient points about the composer then introducing the song.
Henry Purcell will get more of a biographical note, his music does form the first half of the concert.
My accompanist has agreed to typeset them for me, then I'm suggesting he emails them to my dad who will do the printing.
Oh happy days. I love doing this sort of thing, I just wish I had more time to do it in!

Get on with it!
It sounds fun, but I guess a bit hard if you're doing something by a lesser known composer, if there isn't that much written about them.
How many words does it have to be?

I'm trying to keep it concise! I want people to concentrate on what I'm singing not r spend the whole concert reading the programme!

I spent a large chunk of last night researching 20th Century English Composers then distilling their biographies so it fits within the context of the concert. I've already written a lot more than 1000 words. My goodness if I do LRSM the problem will be editing down to the right length not writing up to it, especially as they want scholarly notes containing analytical detail!

Well Programme notes with the exception of my biog and photo are with my accompanist who is typesetting them and correcting my spellings. All the words to all the songs are included a few salient points on each composer and some brief info on each song. Even though my diction isn't my weakest point, I still think it is good practice to include all the words. Biog and photo are already prepared. This way Donald gets a chance to write his own biog!

I always thought that the point of programme notes was to personalise the performance - why you chose to play what you're playing, what your interpretation is, and how that relates to the historical/musical context of the music. Having said that, I have no experience whatsoever of how progarmme notes are marked, so please feel free to ignore me completely! But I'd like to hear what type of thing goes down well now, as I'm thinking - nay, planning - something myself that involves programme notes.

Well the Concert perfomance was fine. A real pity that there were only 20 in the audience, and since it was done at my risk...
There's light at the end of the tunnel, a possible two more perofmances of the same programme with someone else doing the publicity, and taking the risk. We'd get some sort of payment, albeit not a huge fee, but as the spade work is done, if there is a chance to reuse the same material then that'll be good.
Meanwhile if anyone here could host the same recital, delightful programme should be a good show, then let me know!
Sorry to sound all commercial about it but it would be nice to recoup the loss!

Glad your performance went ok, shame about the audience but never mind!
