I have just auditioned for the university symphony orchestra .. Thing is I know I won't have got in but that is besides the point. I didn't want to and thought nothing of it until one of my housemates got an application form for me, filled it in and gave it to the conductor . I asked for it back and he said no! So I had to. So this morning, an hour before my audition I picked a piece, learnt it in that hour and played it badly . Had 3 pieces of sight reading, 2 were fine, the other one from some Debussy piece I think was so so hard and full of fast high notes, so I just laughed, made a few notes up and stopped . Hmm, I think I can safely say I haven't got in .

Nat has just phoned to say she has been asked to play the Bass Clarinet in the orchestra.
Now all she has to do is learn to play it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I once had a stab at the bass clarinet. It was a minor miracle if i went 2 bars without an ear-splitting squeak. It was more like playing a dolphin than a musical instrument. Here's hoping you'll fare better than i did... Schubertiad

It's hilarious. I didn't bother going to check the member list of the orchestra because I knew I wouldn't get it. Then I get a phone call from my housemate who is principal oboe saying my name is on there to play bass clarinet in the Bliss Colour Symphony..HELP, why do I get myself in these stupid situations .

Is bass clarinet written in C, but sounding in Eb, a 6th lower than written? Is the fingering the same as Bb/A clarinet?

Bass clarinet is in Bb and sounds an octave and a tone lower than written. I think...
It's mostly the same fingering I think but because it's big like a sax I always slip into sax fingering. Ah well, I will see what the music is like...

I'm probably thinking of Clarinet in Eb then, if such a thing exists, used in Strauss' Alpine Symphony perhaps. I only fake knowing about stuff other than piano .
