Yup I do the same thing - I often mutter to myself as I'm practising - similar things really - to help myself memorise......bassline goes up a third here but DOWN in the recap........etc...... speaking out loud helps the brain to focus.....

I never thought of speaking these out loud, but it makes sense. I once discovered that my mental arithmetic is much more accurate if I speak the numbers I am adding\subtracting etc than if I do it silently. Here is something I find gives my memorising pieces a boost. After a practice session on a piece, I like to play it straight through without stopping. This speeds up my memory process a lot, although I do not know why.

I can't hear the music in my head. I just get a approximate sound in my head. Correct rhythms but the pitching is wrong. Just get the outlining shape really
