Okay. so leaving aside that gratuitous reference to 'The L. Ron Hubbard of Music'... * hate hate kill murder assassinate torture-to-death * ahem ahem shuffle shuffle, sorry ;D What is the big 6 book? Ok, so I can teach all my teens everything they need to know, but the AB book is not easy to work from in terms of setting exercises to work at privately. Is the big 6 book better for this? Steve

I think the AB book is the big six book - the new edition of Music Theory in Practice, with a big 6 on the front cover. Very dry, but has a few tips for the exam and plenty of past-paper-style examples. AP and I used that after having worked through one and a bit books of the ABC of Harmony series.

The big 6 book is the Theory Workbook here, as opposed to Music Theory in Practice here. They're both AB books. Whereas MTiP just gives you 10 pages of text followed by exercises, the big 6 gives you explanation of each question, tips, a worked example and then the exercises. It also has answers for the last two questions. I found MTiP confusing and overly complicated; the big 6 was far easier to understand and apply. Just my opinion...

Thanks, Trebor. You see my difficulty with the Theory in Practise book. The link you provided led to a "Sorry, the page you were trying to access does not exist." error. What is your book called? Given a title, I can do the rest. Steve

I'm surprised none of you has mentioned the Josephine Koh books. That's how I got through my Grade 6. I have to say the MTIP book was no help at all....but Jo Koh breaks each question down into manageable steps. And if buying yet more books is an issue, try your local Oxfam books shop - ours always has theory books in it, usually with only the first page or so attempted (and then people give up!!!!)

I don't need books for teaching myself, obviously, and I agree with your assessment of MTIP for students - useless without teaching and not brilliant as a workbook. I am hoping that the big 6 is something Alex and Heidi (17 & nearly 15) can use independently of my teaching. Would the Koh enable this independence? Steve Hey, the spell checker offers 'petiteness' as an alternative spelling for your name

Steve Hey, the spell checker offers 'petiteness' as an alternative spelling for your name Yes, I think Koh could be used with relative independence - it would just need the occasional checking. I might try Grade7 in the Autumn - I'll start with KOH - is there any point in getting MTIP? Anyone know the BIG 7 book? Any good?

Having looked at the sample pages of each work book, I feel like doing something silly and going straight for Grade 8. I did pass the old-sytle theory paper for LRSM in 1993 when there was one.
I don't know I'm also tempeted by the LmusTCL. My degree counts as a necessary prerequisite.
