I've just watched the Sven and Becks press conferences. Beckham stepping down as captain I think is the right decision, but unlike others I hold the view that he's been a decent captain. He might not be as vocal as say Keane was with United, but he was passionate about his country and football. That's quite obvious through him being upset yesterday, and pleading with the bench to let him have 5 minutes to try to shake his injury off. He's kept going throughout all the stick he has had, especially after France '98. I agree with Sven that Rooney should not be harshly treated, he's young with a lot to learn, and cannot just change his temperament overnight. At least he shows some passion and determination, not always in the right way, but he does it. I had something else to say, but can't remember now .

You wouldn't want to be Ronaldo once pre-season starts... No, me neither, and I adore him, because I'm a United fan ;D.

Beckham was good as captain, but I think it's better that he steps down. It means that there's no 'requirement' to select him, which means Lennon can get played in games where he will be most effective. I reckon one of the central defenders should be the new captain (being a Chelsea fan, I'd say Terry).

I hate Chelsea, but I think Terry will get it. Oh yes, I remember what I was going to say.. I think this year was definitely our best chance to date of winning it, and we really should have, but all is not lost. As Sven said, a lot of the current squad will still be playing in 2008 and 2010, and we have some really good youngsters coming up, so all is not lost.

Yeah. I thought this year we could've done it, but we never really played at our best and then Owen got injured making it much harder. Seems strange to think of all these players getting old. It seems only yesterday that France '98 was happening, and Owen was our young 18-year old wonderkid. But Rooney and Lennon (and others) will be maturing now so there's hope for the future.

We do need to get some positives from this, the youngsters in the team will hopefully grow into a really fine team in 2, 4 years' time.
I think Becks was a decent captain, and I think Gerrard will be next. He's a 'first-on-the-team-sheet' player.
Sven was good to demand the media do not crucify Rooney (as they did with Becks in 98).

I think Lennon is good, I wouldn't start him just yet though. Needs a bit more experience, but he is a good sub to come on and really inject some life into a game. Gerrard is a candidate yes, I guess it will probably be between him and Terry. I'd love Neville but I think he's a bit too old, and Lampard's too much of a moron .

I should probably take the flag off my car now ;D.
I still can't bear to watch the match again. I didn't watch the highlights last night, too traumatic ;D.

It's now a terrible record on penalties. Out of the last 9 major tournaments, we've gone out of 5 of them on penalties. We didn't even qualify for '94, so we couldn't have gone out on penalties. And in 1992 and 2000, we didn't get through the group stages so again we couldn't go out of penalties. The list of people who've missed just grows and grows: Waddle, Pearce, Southgate, Batty, Beckham, Vassell, Gerrard, Lampard and Carragher. It's really depressing.

I know, Sven said they've been practising them, but they either practised too much, or the whole thing about penalties and us always going out on them makes the players just lose it?
I was pleased with the fans during the match, they kept singing and trying to get behind the team which was good.
What they do now is another matter....

You can practise all you like, but the training ground can't possibly represent a packed stadium with all hopes resting on you...really, we should have scored in the first 120 minutes.

Why don't they do the penalties first. Then they know what they're playing for and the pressures off when they take then.
On second thoughts why don't they just do the penalties, would save a lot of time, the whole tournament could be over in a afternoon.

Isn't that how it works? Seems to be for England. We race around a pitch for 120 mins and the whole thing is decided on penalties. Might as well cut to the chase. We could then cut the team down to a goalie and a striker and save a lot of money too
