I've never used his studies that much for clarinet and sax, played a few but not many, and never really used them with students. Until recently. Getting my grade 5 clarinet and sax pupils to use studies of his as one of their exam pieces, they're really quite good!

His music is very good. I gave my last student Sir Neville and Tumbledown Blues, which she did well at. I hoped to get her onto Slavonic Dance, but we finished lessons before that stage. They teach swing style as well, which people like. Personally I think every clarinettist should have 40 Modern Studies, along with Weston's 50.

I like Slow Motion as a study on the grade 2 syllabus, and Tumbledown Blues on grade 4. I'm liking Exclusive more and more as a grade 5 study too.

I have looked at it and tried it. I like the opening bars but then i dont really like the bit where it goes low and scales up in thirds or something?? Not to fond on the high notes either I really enjoy Scherzando Sax !!! Which is what i think will play for my exam.

I went to a clarinet choir playday at the end of last year, and James Rae came along to conduct one of his own pieces. He's a very jolly Yorkshireman who likes his beer - top bloke!
